Plumbers: How can one make their drains smell nicer?

This would be a 30 year old property. There is not excessive odor coming from the drains but it is slightly noticable. Doing a complete drain sweep would be ideal, I guess. But we%26#039;re not looking for something that extensive because the problem is not even noticable to most. It%26#039;s just a slight odor.

I%26#039;m thinking there must be some bacteria down there that might be addressed with some liquid or powder that would kill it off or help to retard further growth.

What would that be? Baking soda? Chlorine Bleach? There may be a drain deodorizer on the market, I%26#039;ve just not seen it in my limited selection grocery and hardware stores in my area.

Your recommendation?

Put some lemon in your sink grinder and it will get rid of the odor. Do this once a week until the odor is gone.
Reply:I wouldn%26#039;t recommend using chlorine bleach with your bare hands, as it could burn your skin.

A safer solution would be to pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by a cup of white vinegar. Let it fizz up and wait 15 minutes. The chemical reaction will break down any gunk that is stuck in the pipes. Then pour a gallon of boiling water down the drain and you should be all set. I do this to my kitchen and bathroom drains whenever they are clogged or smelly.

If you do have a garbage disposal, the other person%26#039;s answer about grinding up a lemon is a great idea.
Reply:Muriatic acid.
Reply:Clorox is the answer..It will kill any germs %26amp; bacteria. Once a week I wash the basins %26amp; sinks %26amp; bathroom stools with clorox. Also put some in every drain you have..shower..floor etc..A cupful per gallon of water, is strong enough..It won%26#039;t hurt your hands..it cleanses..will make the undersides of you nails clean..if you%26#039;re a mechanic. The same mixture works good to sponge mop your bathrooms %26amp; kitchen..
Reply:Bag of Soda Crystals otherwise known as Washing Soda about 50pence a bag from Tesco, they are in the section for cleaning products.

When necessary last thing at night I pour dry crystals down drain. Flush them through with kettle of boiling water, rinse through by leaving tap on for a few minutes the following morning. Or follow instructions on bag. Very good and cheap for cleaning out build up of soap in washing machines too. In fact you can use instead of washing powder.
Reply:One of our friends is a master plumber and to keep drains running clear/fresh he recommends running 1/2 gal a bleach down ALL drains at night before bedtime... It keeps drains running smooth and it cheaper than using DRAINO.... Just remember to flush the toilet BEFORE you use it the next day !

OR he suggested using DIET COKE it%26#039;s really cheap if you buy it in a 2 liter and it will keep the drains free/clear as well..

Good luck
