How can I get smoke and pet odor out of my new apartment? I%26#039;ve steam cleaned all of the carpets, used carpet deodorizer and scrubbed down all of the walls, but you can still smell the odor that was there. I want to get rid of the odor, not just mask it with candles and air fresheners. Please share any tips and tricks you might have!
How can I get my new apartment to smell better?
At the paint store they sell a chemical you can try first to use on the walls by washing them first. If that doesn%26#039;t work, Paint. Next the carpet. You need a neutralizer that a carpet cleaning supply carries, or try the pet store. I%26#039;ve heard you can also try baking soda, club soda too. The only problem is that you need to re -clean the carpets adding the nuetralizer in the solution. If it%26#039;s really bothersome then ask for replacement carpet. Hope this helps. Good luck!
Reply:carpets gotta go! There is some really cool cheap alternatives to flooring..........
Reply:The best de-odorizer that I have seen is alcohol in a can.It is wood alcohol I believe and you should be able to get it at a cleaning supply house.
It seems to kill the germs that cause the odor.I have used it on sandals and it killed the odor right then and there.
It worked better than the washing machine on those things and they were stinking too.
Reply:burn the damm thing down, then it will have the out door smell
Reply:Aslie C is more or less right. Replace the carpet. Katch is correct in that a black light lamp can show you where the urine marked the carpet and that the underpadding is affected. The steam cleaning is not enough, you can try the peroxide where you find the black-light lit stains but it%26#039;s probably better to change the carpet since you have to deeply soak the carpet with peroxide or urine odor remover from the pet shop, which will leave the carpet wet and cause other problems.
Reply:it%26#039;ll take time, but plants (especially spider plants and peace lilies) help clean the air. in the meantime you may want to air it out on a regular basis, and/or burn incense.
Reply:paint it, put new carpets in.
Reply:Git an airfreshner which removes the odor
Reply:Burn candles or incense. The best incense is Champa in the red, white, and blue box. They are from India and they make my apartment smell really nice.
Reply:take a bath everyday.
Reply:if possible open all the windows and let it air out well
Reply:replace all carpet and linens. That is the only thing. Maybe even slap some paint on the walls.
Reply:buy an air purifier machne
Reply:If someone had pets that went on the carpet, then the odor could be coming up from the carpet pad and cleaning the carpet ten times won%26#039;t get rid of that. The carpet and pad will have to be replaced, and possibly the flooring beneath it, depending on how bad it is.
If it just smells from the pets being inside too much, the Febreeze works for me. Got smoke odor out of cloth car seats after a few applications.
Reply:Baking soda on the carpet. Let it sit for a few hours. Open all windows and let the place air out.
You may need to invest in a black light to find the source of pet odor on the carpet though. Once you find it, soak area with Hydrogen Peroxide (it wont bleach it) and let dry.
Reply:duh , haven%26#039;t u heard of air fresheners???!!! ....., well @ least i got points 4 this. * hope it works!!!!!!!!*
Reply:well opening the windows and letting some fresh air could help u .
Do it at some time everyday.
Reply:bleach water is always good.... I also like Febreeze...
Reply:Try an ionic air purifier. Carpets are very tricky. Not sure what kind of carpet cleaner you used..I had a Bissell and I noticed that it wasn%26#039;t sucking up nearly as much water as it put out. I now have a Hoover and it is a lot better. There is a spray on QVC that works great. Spray this all over...it will work. I think QVC has ionic air purifiers too. Good luck.
Reply:I would try scrubbing the carpets another few times. As far as Pet odor, you are pretty much stuck, but smoke odor should dissapate with time. I would open the windows as much as possible as this too will help. Have you spoken to your landlord about replacing the carpet? I would also throw a coat or two of paint on the walls.
Reply:Have you tried washing the walls with a cleaner with bleach in it? Also, you may need to replace the carpets. Fabrics soak up an amazing amount of odor and sometimes you just can%26#039;t get it out. Do you have new draperies? If not, invest in some.
Reply:AIR REFRESHNER! lol
Reply:use febreze
Reply:I always say %26quot;freebeeze it%26quot;
Reply:This is not going to be the answer you want but you have to change the carpet.Once an animal goes to the bathroom it gets down in the pad and you won%26#039;t be able to steam clean it out.
Reply:Try inscents. They worked great for me. I loved the tranquil feelling that they gave to me too.
Try Frebreeze. It gets rid of everything. It leeves the house smelling fresh. They have many kinds, like some that don%26#039;t affect athsma or allergies.
Try potpouri. it may work. I don%26#039;t like it, but it makes my parents bathroom smell good.
Over where the pets smell is way to strong, like where they went to the bathroom, sprinkle baking powder or soda. It makes the sour smell leave, but then you have the smell, (not bad) but it smells like the baking soda you put down.
Hope this helped!
Reply:Open the windows!

ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of ways to remove a certain odor or stain in a carpet. It depends on the type of carpet and its fabric. I liked the Q&A discussion that you provided above. That definitely gave me some ideas on how to work on minor dirt issues at home.
ReplyDeleteIn our house in Seattle, carpet cleaners are hired to remove tough dirt. It is ideal to seek the help of a (Seattle) carpet cleaner twice in a year. That way, accumulation of dirt would be prevented.
Very informative post. Thanks!
